for the January 9, 2012 meeting

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

Please note that the January meeting of the Pueblo West Quilters has been changed from the first Monday (January 2nd) to the second Monday of January 9th due to the closeness of the Holidays. Same place and same time - Gabby's Diner, doors open at 6:30pm, meeting starts at 7:00pm. With five Mondays in the month of January this year, the Executive Board wanted more organizational time to start the year off right.

On behalf of the new 2012 Board, we'd like to thank the out-going 2011 Board for all the hard work they did in 2011. It was a busy and fun year. The Christmas Party was the icing on the cake, so to speak, to end the year with a flourish.

The 2012 Board is excited to work with members and guests, new and old, at the January 9th meeting which is traditionally our LUV Quilt Worknight. Directions for what to bring to the meeting were passed out at the December meeting and will also follow this Newsletter. As a reminder, the following ladies volunteered to bring their sewing machines: Patsy Morris, Mary Richardson, Mari Pretzer, Sandy McDonald, Chris Magan. Also Vicki Becker and Patty Dunnington volunteered to bring ironing boards and irons. Everyone needs to bring at least one fat quarter in pastels or juvenile prints (or more if you like) cut according to the directions, and cutting tools. It will be a surprise how this will all come together. Call me at 547-8476 if you have questions.

As with any new board, there will be changes and one change that you need to know will begin at this January 9th meeting. We will no longer have refreshments supplied by the Board or any volunteers. The organization is just getting too big to include refreshment time and still devote the amount of time everyone wants for enjoying Sew N Share and the programs. So, if you have to have something to drink, (or eat) bring it. Remember we now have PWQ travel mugs for purchase and you can bring whatever beverage you want to last you through the meeting.

We'll have new sign up sheets at the meeting for the various committees, so please consider helping the club by volunteering for at least one thing during the year so no one has such a heavy load. The 2012 Board has lots of ideas for the year and we are always open to any ideas from the rest of the membership, so please let us know what you need and want to make PWQ YOUR club.

Remember to bring money to pay your annual dues of $25.00 (guests are $3.00.) Also funds for in-house drawing, PWQ pens, pins or mugs, and/or Fons & Porter Love of Quilting subscription ($20.00), your red/white/black Block-of-the-Month square (and one in red/white/blue for Wounded Warriors) of which the directions for were passed out at the Dec. meeting and will follow this Newsletter. We will be having a BOM every month, and Evie Sheldon will be presenting the February BOM at the January 9th meeting. If you completed anything new, please bring it for Sew N Share.

Greetings and Salutations,

We are at the end of yet another year with the Pueblo West Quilters Guild so as I look for things to chat about within this Newsletter, that you may be interested in, first, of course is the Christmas Party. See the box at the right:

I decided to do a recap of what has occurred this year – I may miss some things but I am going to try to cover it all – Ready ? Here we go:

”2011 – THIS, THAT YEAR, THAT WAS – 2011“

First we will start with the meetings: Let’s take a look at what happened this year, therefore, this is the year that was…..2011

January 3, was the first meeting of the year, this is traditionally a night to kick off our LUV Quilts Project. True to form; a new pattern was introduced by our Treasurer, Nina Stevens. It is a stash buster type of pattern…however it seems I have even more pieces leftover…still! How does that work – certainly not mathematically!

February 7, was our own Carolyn Collette sharing Hints, Websites and Blog Sites and how to traverse them. You can get lost in there and it can take hours to find your way back out of the electronic land. I see why it is called ‘The Web’. Great Job Carolyn!

March 7^th, was Shelli Vahlbusch from the Pueblo Police Department – she gave us information about personal defense, she gave hints about what to watch for and what not to fall prey to in the situations in which we find ourselves on a daily basis. She wanted us to think about ‘what would we do’ and ‘what should we do’, like if they want your purse – GIVE IT TO THEM – and live unharmed for another day.

April 4, was Zentangles and Quilting, have you zentangled since then? Patsy Morris and Evie Sheldon were the presenters. It could be a stress buster and a way to relax after sitting at that sewing machine all day. Of course you may be back at the sewing machine with your creation. Super presentation Patsy !

May 2, was Nani Kaai from Nala’s Quilt Shoppe in Fountain, CO – she talked about “Inspirations” and where to get ideas. She had a very inspiring talk and trunk show of innovative ideas which just added to our ‘things we want to do sometime’ list. You have one don’t you?

June 6, the program was Cyndi McChesney of Canon City, with ‘Reheated Leftovers’. It was a fun program she gave us some outstanding ways of cutting, collecting, keeping and using the leftovers from past quilts. She had ways to use this cut collection, making quilts that are fun and stash busting in nature.

July 11, brought us our ‘Come to the Fair’ there were many drawings, demo table prizes, door prizes, Ways and Means tables, and a Bake Sale table…..it was a busy night!

It was a FUN night and GREAT JOB by one and all! ! !

August 1, was a History of the Log Cabin Quilt with our own Katya Holen taking us thru time and how it influenced the Log Cabin. It is always interesting to see how things came about and what kind of influences changed and/or improved the patterns and processes. A big THANKS to Katya!

September 12, we welcomed Denise Hovey from Creative Cloth Closet in Canon City she had some really cool ideas and fun things to share, showing completed projects and as usual she came up with more ideas right on the spot – my kind of lady! – I have noticed that she is really good at playing off one idea and jumping to another – and sharing them too.

October 3, was Scott Beaver from Manitou Springs, he told of how he got started and shared a trunk show that was inclusive of his beginning quilting efforts to date. He has a shop in Manitou Springs which he encouraged us to visit.

November 7, was Cindy Thomas, from Colorado Springs and Ruth’s Stitchery, as our guest speaker with an interesting program, which included working with wool, a bit of history about wool and of course information on how to properly felt wool, and to think, we always thought it was only an annoying laundry accident. She also had wool items to share and show what you can do with wool.

December 5, will be our Christmas Dinner Party hosted by our own Mary Richardson, anyone who has been involved in a Christmas Party that she has hosted knows that she ‘does them well’, so we can only expect to have a fun time after the ‘as short as I can make it’ business meeting and new officer installation completes. No pressure Mary! (honest, I know we will love it)

Now to a list of all the other extraneous things that we as a group had the opportunity to partake of:

Sharing opportunities / statistics:

Ø 12 blocks and $16 - Cyndi McChesney went to New Zealand where the worst earthquake in their history had hit, due to the tragedy she had suggested she would take blocks with her for the guilds there to make into quilts, she had chosen the rail fence. I am proud to say that from the Pueblo West Quilters she received 12 blocks and $16 to assist with the quilts at the far end and/or defraying the cost of an extra suitcase.

Ø LUV Quilts – this year we contributed a total of 67 completed quilts

The breakdown is: 39 Quilts were made for Joplin tornado victims *

14 Bama Bound Quilts for Alabama tornado victims *

24 LUV Quilts went to assist in our local communities

Ø LUV Pillowcases - 35 were made and contributed (some were with Wounded Warrior quilts)

Ø Wounded Warrior Quilts - 18 were assembled and donated to the Wounded Warriors **

Ø A Quilt made for the Women in Law Enforcement

Ø A Quilt made for Gabby’s Diner and Catering that was for Ben – in lieu of payment for space to meet.

Together: Sewing / interacting / socializing / learning

Ø Together: Class opportunities:

o Bean Bag Game Quilt – fun to make and fun to give !

o Reheated Leftovers - made use of the strips created due to the June Meeting !

o Twisted Log Cabin – another way to use those strips we have been creating !

o Shades of . . . - a quick wall hanging that is fun to embellish !

We had our members and a couple of non-members take advantage of the classes. The space was acquired, time allocated and instructor time coordinated to present the opportunity for learning and some socializing. (Of course we went to lunch or dinner - whichever was appropriate)

Ø *Together: Socializing and projects:

o Quilts for Joplin’ and ‘Bama Bound Quilts back a few lines you were given statistics of the afore mentioned quilts: 39 for Joplin and 14 for Alabama, they were done in 6 weeks – imagine that, 53 quilts in 6 weeks - WOW –

We allocated time at the Library and spend 5 days in 3 weeks at the Library, There were many involved who came for a couple of hours or came for the day or did what they could and some could not stay but came with fabric to share – we had people that came to see and left a donation, or in a couple of cases sat down and hand sewed on labels or bindings. Aren’t people wonderful!

PLUS: We were extremely fortunate to have several long arm quilters that gave of their time to quilt up these quilts.

We managed to get an article in ‘The View’ (Thanks, Nina for making those calls) Nina also managed to obtain more donations from several of the business’ in the area, using the flyers that Carla’s daughter made with the thought of donations that could be used for supplies.

A church from the area, River of Grace, was going to Joplin to assist and made room to transport our 39 quilts. What a great thing! It saved us a bunch of postage. You know postage, it was a bunch!

We were not as lucky with the Alabama quilts but we still managed to post 14 of them with some donations from those who could not get time to work on them and some that worked on them and still donated money plus a small balance with which the Guild assisted, to attain the goal.

One thing you should realize when reading all of this is that we have an AWESOME GROUP OF PEOPLE who gave of their time, their fabric, their creativity, their gas, their food, their money, etc, etc. We should also note that some spouses have contributed a lot to assist.

Ø **Together: Wounded Warrior Quilts / Pillowcases –

o We have a block of the month and if you wish you can make a red/white/blue block in the Block of the Month pattern this group who calls themselves ‘The Tuesday Night Divas’, take and make into a quilt for the Wounded Warriors.

This calendar year, we as a group have made enough blocks that the Tuesday Night group has put together, made backings for, gotten batting, some from the guild and some donated themselves, quilted and put on the bindings and labels - - - (drum roll please !) There are 18 of them for the year of 2011 ! ! ! ! SPECTACULAR ! ! ! !

Janet Flick accepts these quilts and delivers them to The Eagles Summit Ranch in Westcliffe, a nonprofit organization created to help wounded Soldiers deal with injuries sustained in combat. She tries to obtain enough for each graduate to receive one when they graduate.

Ø Together: Sew and Socialize

o We had time allocated at the Library to come and Sew and Socialize for one morning in October and one in November those that came brought something to work on and enjoyed time chatting and getting to know one another – of course we went out for lunch – and it was a good time for all who participated.

Ø Together: Ways and Means

o Ways and Means tables were available during the meetings March thru November, at these tables were accepted donations for the guild and these were sold. The funds are part of what is funding our functions

o Come to the Fair was also used as a fundraising with the ticket price at the door, the Ways and Means Tables and the Bake Sale Table, we were able to obtain the income needed to help sustain our guild.

Things I know that are annual and you may want to participate in for the next year,

either by attending or entering a quilt or quilted item.

Just another note: There are always International Quilt Shows all around the country and even Quilting Cruises – just check out your magazines for more opportunities – or a travel agent that specializes in Quilting tours, trips, etc (they too can be found in those wonderful magazines we all get throughout the year)

Last but not least I would like to say - It has been my honor to serve in the capacity as President for 2011, it is my hope that all of you will look seriously at the by-laws and see what committee you may be able to assist with during the 2012 Year, even if it is only for a part of the year it will make things easier for our incoming board.

President Evie called the meeting to order. The Christmas Party to be held December 5th at Gabby's Diner was discussed. A Wounded Warrior invitation was read by Janet Flick.

The nominating Committee reported that after many, many calls to members with no positive response a board was finally formed. President..Katya Holen; Vice President...Patsy Morris; Secretary.. Heidi Gard; Treasurer...Rosie Gould.

Evie gave a short briefing on her out going Presidents Block. Hand outs are available if you did not get one at the meeting. It was also attached to the last President's newsletter.

Sew and share was enjoyed by all. We are such a prolific group of quilters, many beautiful quilts were shown.

This was made in a class given by Katya Holen

One of the 21 Wounded Warrior quilts donated this year by the Tuesday night Diva's group. Keep those red/white/blue blocks coming ladies!

Our Guest Speaker was Cindy Thomas from Ruth's Stitchery who gave a wonderful trunk show and talk on using wool in your quilting.

.Greetings and Salutations,

Our meeting in October was Scott Beaver from Manitou Springs, it proved to be an interesting evening, he

told of how he got started and shared a trunk show that was inclusive of his beginning quilting efforts to

date. He had a full day with the class for ‘Shades of . . . .’ earlier that afternoon prior to the meeting.

We, who were involved in the class for the Twisted Log

Cabin, had an enjoyable experience. Each of the participants

were assembled one of the four blocks (some got more

completed) and were given the methods to accomplish the

remainder of the wall hanging. Sooooo… there may be a

couple of the wall hangings showing up soon – or later after

all we are heading into the Holiday seasons with gifts to

make, purchase, wrap, send, etc etc etc.

Those of you who have worked on Wounded Warrior quilts –

made blocks – put the quilts together – quilted the quilt – put

a binding on – well anyway you get the idea. Janet Flick

conveyed the message that we have been extended an

invitation to attend the Wounded Warrior Graduation and

potluck. It is scheduled for 11/10 beginning at 6 pm. If you

are interested or would like more information, contact Janet

at 719-783-2955 or see her at the November Meeting.

Sew and Socialize – in October not many showed up –

however those that did enjoyed chatting and stitching

followed by lunch – it was nice to have time to chat and we

had applique, a quilt binding and hand quilting goin’ on – it was

great, stitching and getting to know one another – Next

scheduled Sew and Socialize for November 16th again at the

Library 9 am to 12:45 pm with the option to have go out to

lunch with us - hope to see you there.

Well, here we are at the bottom of the page and I still have

more things….let’s do the most important first….Novembers meeting will be followed by Cindy Thomas, she

appears to be a very busy person, she works at Ruth’s Stitchery in Colorado Springs, where she is their

expert on Wool and Quilting. She also has a web site: http://www.dreamcatcherquilting.com/ that entails a

business along with it…busy lady. It should be an interesting program.

October 3, 2011 Meeting

President Evie called the meeting to order.
Mary Richardson gave a report on the Christmas party to be held at Gabby's Diner. Each member must pay $2.00 to Nina Stevens to insure their spot at the party.

Ben's quilt was shown. It was pieced by member's of the guild and quilted by Patsy who volunteered her time to quilt it.

Katya gave a brief description of her class "Twisted Log Cabin" which will be held on October 29th.

Many colorful Halloween Block of the Months were made for the October meeting.

Nina demonstrated both Nov and December blocks.

Sew and share was and is always enjoyed by all.

Scott Beaver of Scott Beaver Designs was the guest speaker.

President's Newsletter

Today, as I write this newsletter I am thinking about the fact that this is the first day of the Fall Season. Someone I walk with in the morning told us this was so….and I thought do I really care? ? Well the answer was yes I guess I do, if I did not my life would be passing and I would just be an on looker, a non-participant, that would be sad! So, I have made a list, as I am a list maker, and now I need to accomplish the items upon that list. The list I make are not always obtainable, however, I do believe this one is unless I start adding things. Who really cares about the dust???? Right??? First and foremost are the Guild duties I need to dispatch and once those are completed I just may rush right into that dusting. You will notice may is underlined! So onward!

I would say that the Reheated Leftovers class was great but it has not happened yet – it is tomorrow and I do have expectations that it will be a great lot of fun. Getting ready for the class is still on yesterday’s list. (oppsss)

Mary Richardson told about the December Christmas Party meeting. It sounds great and is in an easily accessible and familiar location – Gabby’s – The $2 fee can be paid to the Treasurer anytime – that will hold your reservation. Perhaps Mary will give us yet another ‘teaser’ at the October meeting.

We are looking forward to a class by Katya Holen for the Twisted Log Cabin that she had shown during our July Meeting’s ‘Come to the Fair’. She has been a bit on the crazy busy side since she retired and of course it is summer and they do love to go to the mountains and they have done some traveling also but we have gotten her to commit to October 29^th, 9 am to 1 pm, class fee of $20. Space is limited. The fee can be paid at the October meeting, see Nina at the check in table. Let us know if you want one of those spaces.

The October Meeting will be Scott Beaver, he can be found at www.scottbeaverdesigns.com the meeting promises to be an interesting evening, and full day for those who choose to take his workshop: ‘Shades of . . . .’ which will be a wall hanging in a quick and easy appliqued technique. President Evie called meeting to order by welcoming guests and new members.

A nominating committee is needed by the October meeting to line up new board members for the 2012 year.

Mary Richardson gave a report on the progress of the Christmas Party .

The Wounded Warrior Quilts were shown. Tuesday night group which meets at Mary Richardson's every Tue evening have been using the red/white/blue BOM to make quilts for the retreat at Westcliffe, CO

President's News

Greetings and Salutations,
Here we are in September – our meeting date was pushed out to the
12th due to the Holiday.
Hooray for Holidays…not because of the change in the date but just because I like them. Hope you
have some fun things planned. When you are done with them you will have your guild meeting to look
forward to.
This month we will be welcoming Denise Hovey from Creative Cloth Closet in Canon City coming in to
share some fun things – she has some really cool ideas and things to share. I always like those
enthused people who have fun ideas. Even though sometimes I do not do them (it is that time element,
I am certain you all know about that ☺)
A reminder! We have the class for the Reheated Leftovers by Cyndi McChesney – remember the
program when she gave us all those wonderful things that we can do with all those bits, pieces, and
fabric ‘leftovers’ from previous projects that seem to grow exponentially in our fabric storage areas
and corners of the sewing rooms, in baskets and bins and paper bags with handles even . . . . well here
is the class that goes with – we had 27 who signed up as interested so you need to get signed up at the
meeting on the 12th the seats left available will then be put out to our sister quilters who were not
able to get a space in a class held for their guilds. Class to be held on Saturday 9/24, the cost is $20
that needs to be prepaid by the 12th of September.
Hey, have you been working on those Block of the Month blocks? I mean making the one for your quilt
at the end of the year – Do you remember that if you make one for yourself also that by the end of
the year you will have enough blocks for a quilt top of your own or one to give as a gift. You know the
question – How hard could that be? – well apparently it is hard because I myself need to do some catch
up so I will be ready to receive the last two blocks and assembly instructions in October and time to
be ready to show my creation with you all at the December Christmas Party meeting. That should be
exciting to see what each of us has done with the same pattern.
Our October Meeting will be Scott Beaver of Scott Beaver Designs, we are working on pulling
together a class – more information will be forthcoming at the September meeting as he will be
visiting us and doing a teaser (so to speak) then he will be off to Nebraska - busy people are usually
fun to listen to and learn from so-o-o-o-o on that note - more to come….

We had many very colorful block of the months.

Sew & Share was enjoyed with a variety of items being shown.

Vicki shared her mile a minute quilt which she did a demo on at the "Come to the Fair" meeting in July.

New business..........A nominating committee will be needed at the next meeting September 12th 7PM

Denise Hovey from Creative Cloth Closet in Canon City will be the guest speaker showing gadgets for the Go Cutters and how to use them to make beautiful quilts.

WHEW! We have had a busy month and a half, so – take a deep breath – sit down – relax – let’s look at what we have done. Those that were present at the July ‘Come to the Fair’ from what I heard and saw had a lot of fun. We had a lot of visitors and we had a lot going on – with many drawings and several demos. There were Ways and Means and Bake Sale tables. It was a busy night. A great big THANKS goes to our presenters: Vicki Becker doing the Mile a Minute booth, Carolyn Collette showing Hot Dog Pillowcases, Katya Holen presenting The Twisted Log Cabin, Patsy Morris exhibiting an insight to Coloring your Quilt, Nina Stevens introducing the Block of the Month for August, and Sandy McDonald (who had just had surgery) delivering a 10 Minute Block quick assist, with her vivacious assistant, Carol Hires. GREAT JOB to one and all! ! ! Looks like a couple of classes will be forthcoming…keep watching for them. See the attached Treasurers report for the income obtained from the ‘Fair’.

A photo collage of the quilts that went to Joplin was available for viewing and should be at the next meeting.….we have more leaving for Alabama (Bama Bound Quilts) Saturday July 23. I do not have the final count on those but I am certain we can get that for the August meeting.

The article in The View regarding us working in the Library on Quilts for Joplin has brought some interest and we have been given fabric, from a couple of sources, some of which we have put towards more LUV Quilts and some that will be put on the Ways and Means table. There is cotton and wool and other fabrics – we decided each of us has other projects that may take fabrics of a different property than cotton sooooo you now have the opportunity to purchase (inexpensively I might add) different types. Therefore you may want to get to the meeting early enough to do a bit of shopping.

Advertisement time, we have available mugs (cups) insulated with stainless steel inside red with stars and pretty green pens with the name of our guild – check them out help fund your favorite Quilt Guild - we (that ‘we’ includes you too) are your favorite guild right?

Our program for August is a History of the Log Cabin Quilt with our own Katya Holen taking us thru time and how it influenced the Log Cabin. It will be interesting to hear how the Log Cabin has progressed thru and because of history.

Come to the Fair was a great success. There was yummy treats on the bake sale table and many for sale items on the Ways and Means table.

Greetings and Salutations,

It is time to write another Newsletter, I am not certain exactly what to write as it has been a very busy month. I guess we will start with the June program by Cyndi McChesney which was ‘Reheated Leftovers’. It was a fun program – in some cases it was an affirmation of things we are already doing to some extent, it also gave us some outstanding things to add to our ways of collecting, keeping and using the leftovers from past quilts. We will be looking into classes by Cyndi and let you know when, where and the cost, hopefully soon.

We have been really busy with ‘Quilts for Joplin’ and ‘Bama Bound Quilts’. I am certain you all have been as busy too. After several days at the library we have gotten several quilts completed and know there are more out there. The group going to Joplin, who has offered to transport them, will be leaving on Saturday, July 9^th so we will need to get them all together prior to that time. We would like to have them all collected on or before by July 6^th, please call Nina at 647-9010 or Evie at 647-2936, to make arrangements for drop off.

July - - - - is finally here – - - - soon there will no more enticing secrecy – the Board is excited to present this program and Fund Raiser, as is the Committee, which is made up of Jean, Sandy McD, Patsy, Carolyn, Carol H., Barbara, Nina and Evie. ‘Come to the Fair’ promises to be fun and a bit hectic, as we will have many things to see, to purchase and to win – well, how can you go wrong with that combination? ! ? ! ? ! ?

There is a $2 Fair Entrance fee for Members and the usual $3 Guest Fee will include Fair Entrance. Some things you can know at this time – a Baked Goods table which we need items for, 2 (count them) 2 Ways and Means table – again bring your items to add to these tables. New! Never before seen items are planned for release at this time – you too will want at least one! Bring your items to assist in having lots for sale.

This is a great meeting to invite your friends and neighbors. There will be some wonderful ideas and opportunities, plus some awesome things to be purchased. J

Some members make an extra BOM in red/white/blue for the Wounded Warrior Quilts that the Tuesday night group makes.

Sew and Share is always the highlight of the most meetings!!! We love seeing how productive/creative/ our members can be!!

Cyndi McChesney was our guest speaker. Her lecture was titled "Reheated Leftovers". She gave may good suggestions how to cut left over fabrics into strips for future use in quilts.

The program at the May meeting was Nani from Nala’s Quilt Shoppe in Fountain, CO – if you have not taken time to check out their shop, it is a short drive and wonderful shop. Of course if you were at the meeting you saw some of the items from the shop. Nani showed items made by her and quilting by her partner/sister Laura which gave a whole lot of ideas and thoughts for possibilities – did you go home and figure out what was next for you? It is good to have photos they definitely assist the memory cells.

Here comes our June Meeting, ready or not. The evening should be a good one…we have Cyndi McChesney coming with a program on ‘Reheated Leftovers’. As we know all too well you can make quilts and you seem to have as much in your stash as you did at the beginning. It seems the leftovers from each quilt take up as much room as the original pieces of fabric did……so perhaps we will get some good ideas as to what to do with them.

We have July to look forward to with the ‘Come to the Fair’ remember this will be a fun time and a Fund Raiser…we will be having a Baked Goods table which we need items for, along with a couple of Ways and Means tables – we have some fun things that will be new and of course if you have items that will assist this would be the time to bring them as we hope to have guests. Everyone should have one. So why not bring one of your own, guest that is.

Just so you know we do look at the Suggestions as they come in and have hopefully addressed them as best we can – the latest one we were glad to see as sometimes it is not easy to tell how things are going – the note read simply ‘Thank you for doing a great job! It is greatly appreciated!’ Whoever wrote this anonymous note the board would like you to know that it is really nice to know someone thinks that. So, A big Thank you from all of us!

President Evie called our May meeting to order.

Old Businness was Thank you from Alzheimer Association for art quilts. A quick run of suggestions from suggestions box and on to new business. July meeting will be Come to the Fair.

Carolyn asked members to please let her know where they wanted the Luv quilts and pillowcases to be donated to.

Many Block of the Month's were brought back to the meeting. A vote was taken for all blocks to be given to one person winning the drawing for them. Red/white/blue blocks can also be made for the Wounded Warrior Project quilts which are donated to Westcliffe's retreat for Wounded Warriors.

Sew and Share is always a great time for all members and visitors. We get to see all the wonderful creative quilts, bags, wall hanging, art quilts, etc that members make.

Our program for May was Nani of NaLa's Quilt Shoppe from Fountain, Co. She spoke to us about "Inspirations".

Nani showed us many beautiful quilts she has made and some of her favorite techniques and books.

Greetings and Salutations,

Okay, here we are time to get ready for the next meeting and in doing so I need to write a letter of news…whatever that means. The program for April as you may recall was Zentangles and Quilting, have you zentangled since then? Are we going to see any quilts that are Zentangle inspired? I thought most of those present, were, if not interested at least curious and enjoyed the opportunity to see into a type of relaxation and quilting that you may not have encountered previously. You can check online at zanyquilter.blogspot.com (the bar below the header picture has a tutorial).

I heard from a friend, who is not a guild member, that the Fantasy Fiber Forest in Canon City is really good – you have until the 30^th to go and enjoy that show. I am looking at my calendar, checking for when I may be able to squeeze this in.

The month of May is racing towards us breakneck speed, hence, the squeezing the calendar statement earlier, our program for May will be given by Nani from NaLa’s Quilt Shoppe in Fountain, on ‘Ispirations’. If your enthusiasm is at a low point, perhaps this will get your creative flow back in place. Don’t forget the tablet and writing utensil…or the ‘morning after’ the forgetter we all seem to have, will have kicked in and forgotten, and gone those ideas will be, hence bring that auxiliary brain aka pen and paper.

Preview time: as those who have been on the board know having the entire year planned is not an easy thing to do. So for the Preview of some of the coming events – June will be Cyndi McChesney with ‘Reheated Leftovers’ and July will be ‘Come to the Fair’ a fun time.

Now is a good place and time to say a few things. We need to do some fund raising and we also know

that Cyndi Lauper did have it correct ‘Girls (DO) Just Want to Have Fun’ so in July the ‘Come to the

Fair‘ event will also be a bit of a fund raiser, fun time, a sharing time and with a bit of help from all

a way to get some funds. There has been a bit of planning and we had so-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o many great

ideas – we are thinking of breaking them up into two different times of fun and funding opportunities.

Are you up for it? There will be more information during the meeting in May.

April 2011 Meeting

April 4th meeting was called to order by our President Evie.

The members who participated in the Alzheimer's Assistance Art Quilts showed their wall quilts. They had to use a picture drawn by an Alzheimer's patient and make a wall hanging quilt depicting the art chosen.

BOM for April was a great success! There were many colorful Easter colored blocks for the drawing.

BOM for May was presented by Nina Stevens.

Greetings and Salutations,

March was proving that it could be ‘in control’ of our lives using weather, however we had a fairly good turnout in spite of Mother Nature. Cudos to those who weathered the storm and came anyway. The program was Shelli Vahlbusch from the Pueblo Police Department – talking about personal defense, she gave us a lot of good information, with a question and answer portion of her presentation. There were quite a few questions and we were given a lot of information that we can use in our daily comings, goings and even at our homes.

Weekday Sew and the Sew Saturday scheduled for March were canceled due to lack of participants, there were a few and we made certain that they got a time to be assisted as needed. I am certain you will be seeing a couple of the Bean Bag Quilt Games at one of our Sew and Share times.

Do you remember the email I forwarded on to you – it was short notice so the snail mailers did not get the opportunity, sorry – Cyndi McChesney was going to New Zealand where the worst earthquake in their history had hit, an excerpt from her email “I will be staying in hristchurch for a much shorter time frame than anticipated, but want to do something to help and have contact with a quilter in Auckland New Zealand who is ready and willing to accept quilt blocks to be made into quilts for people who were devastated by the tragedy.” Due to the tragedy she was suggesting we send blocks with her and had chosen the rail fence. I am proud to say that from the Pueblo West Quilters she received 12 blocks and $16 towards assisting with the quilts at the far end and/or defraying the cost an extra suitcase.

Our program for the next meeting will be Zentangles and Quilting. Have you heard of Zentangles? Did you know they can be quilted? Come and see if this would be a fun and interesting way of quilting for you. Zentangles can be very relaxing. This is a way to leave the concerns of the day behind and get a good pattern for quilt to do the next day. Program for March was presented by Shelly and officer with the Pueblo Police Department who talked on personal defense.

BOM...demo was given by Nina a variation of the star block using Easter fabrics.

Greetings and Salutations,

Our program for February was our own Carolyn Collette sharing Hints, Websites and Blog Sites. Thanks Carolyn it was great as only you can do. We are fortunate to have someone willing to assist and share. I, myself, tried some of her hints in finding Web and Blog Sites, found YouTube to have lots of little clips to watch – you can get lost in there and it can take hours to find your way back out of the electronic land. I see why it is called ‘ The Web ’

A visitor from the Alzheimer’s Association, Kristi Graham, took a few minutes to tell us about an opportunity, they are having an art auction showing watercolors created by artists with dementia/alzheimer’s. The opportunity for us is to make a companion piece to go with a piece of art – she showed pictures of the art pieces that were juried into the auction. We have a couple of volunteers to do a companion piece or two. These pieces need to be turned in by the end of March, we would like to have photos of our contributions so they can be posted on our blogspot, it is a short deadline but can be done, deadline is March 31st, If you are still interested let me know and I can get a larger copy of the painting of your choice.

Weekday Sew on Thursday, March 10th and Sew Saturday on Saturday, March 19th both days are the same project and 9 am to 1 pm. The project, is ‘Bean Bag Quilt’ when you are finished you will have a great gift, a game and a quilt, for a child or perhaps adults in a home. You will make the game board (a quilt) and the bean bags with a starting line. It would be a quick and fun time with easy sewing leaving more time for interactions (chatting don’t you know) and fun. Be sure and sign up at the meeting or you can email.

February 2011 Meeting

President Evie Sheldon called our February 2011 meeting to order.

Our President in "action"

Kristi Graham gave a short speech on Alzheimer patients and their art work which is being made into quilts to be auctioned off as a fund raiser for Alzheimer. She had many different pictures patients had drawn or painted which could be used to make a quilt or quilts.

Nina demonstrated the March block of the month which is the continuation of the star theme.

There were many blocks made for February's BOM along with many Red/White/Blue block for our Wounded Warriors quilts.

Members enjoyed a presentation by Carolyn Collette . She advised us of many quilting sites available on the internet. How to cut half square triangles. Hints for making your quilting "fuss free".

Greetings and Salutations,

January 3, 2011 was the first meeting of the year, this is traditionally a night to kick off our LUV Quilts Project for the year. This year was no exception; a new pattern was introduced by our Treasurer, Nina Stevens. I can say it is a quick one to put together and it is also a stash buster…however it seems to me I have more pieces now…hmmm…how does that work? The LUV Quilts can use any pattern they do not need to be all made with the pattern given out. We love to see all the ideas everyone has and we always enjoy the Sew and Share portion of the evening.

The program for February 7th is a bit of a redo as last year there was a Hints program also however we have had requests for more, so with a bit of gentle prompting and a lot of chatting (that part was easy) Carolyn Collette has agreed to do Hints Websites and Blog Sites, I would say bring your tablet and pens.

We need people to either step up and help the Planning Committee or it would be acceptable to give your ideas if you cannot give some time. – either in the Suggestion box or via the email (see above). We have already received a couple of good ideas and they are or will be checked into. Anyone wishing to assist please let one of the Board Member know.

I hope to see you all at our next meeting, Monday, February 7th, 2011, at the Solid Ground Restaurant. Remember you can go in put you things down and then come and sign in, enter your Block of the Month and Fat Quarter etc. We are hoping to streamline the check in process and a plus for you is less standing about waiting. Just do not forget to do it.

January 2011 Meeting

President elect Evie Sheldon called the meeting to order.Secretary & Treasurers reports were approved. Old business and new business were discussed all of which will follow in the secretaries report.

Many beautiful block of the months were brought in.

Along with six red/white/blue blocks for our Wounded Warriors at the Westcliffe rehabilitation center.Shown here are two Wounded Warrior quilts from the BOM.

Many beautiful quilts were enjoyed at our "Sew and Share" time.

I hope this finds all enjoying the Seasons Best with just the New Year’s celebration and then time to recuperate. Now that those pesky holidays are about concluded it is time to get back to the fun part of life as a quilter……quilting of course, or designing, or piecing, or what ever part you like the best…then come to Sew and Share – we wanna’ see what you like the best and all forays into different arenas of the craft. So, hey, here comes the New Year with all that fun to share.

The first meeting for 2011 will be held on Monday the 3rd of January, at the Solid Ground Restraurant, 412 S McCulloch Blvd. The doors will open at 6:30 pm. It is once again time for the payment of our dues. This year the dues are $25.00 for the year and due by the February meeting. All guests fees are $3.00 per meeting.

As is the tradition we will be kicking off our ongoing LUV Quilt Project, during the January 2011 meeting. You will receive the pattern and instructions on the night of the meeting. (unfortunately due to size of our guild we will be unable to sew at the meeting)

It is time to get out the By-Laws and check them out – it will be good to go over them – for this meeting look at the committee section and see if you may be able to assist. Perhaps the proverbial ‘Many hands make lighter work for all’ can be enacted and lived out.

Christmas Party

At 6:30pm Vicki Becker welcomed the 55 members and one guest to the Christmas Party which was held at the Carriage House Restaurant, Pueblo.

New Business

It is proposed that the membership dues be increased from $24 to $25 annually. The due fees pay for guest speakers, July social, Christmas Party dinner and sundry supplies.

Vicki gave a thank you to all that have contributed to the guild meetings this past year, including Patsy Morris and Evie Sheldon for writing the guild blog. Those who have helped set up for the meeting, brought refreshments and gave the BOM. Those who helped with the craft fair especially Katya Holen who took donated items to Denver to sell. To Carolyn Collette for collecting and distributing the pillowcases, also thank you to Judy Visalli for collecting and donating the luv quilts. Thank you to all PWQ members for a wonderful year.

This is my last newsletter for 2010 and it has been a pleasure being your President for the year. The board hopes that you enjoyed the programs that were presented this year and I’m sure we will continue to have excellent programs for our guild in the future. November 2010 Meeting

November Meeting was a combination of a Silent Auction, regular meeting and then a showing of our work.

The RED/WHITE/BLUE quilt is a wounded warrior quilt for the retreat at Westcliffe, Co. Each month members make the red/white/blue block of the month. Tuesday night group then pieces them together and quilts them.

A challenge of "Four Seasons" was won by Evie, our new 2011 President. Congratulations !!!!

Many brought quilts to share.

Patsy assisted due to a couple of officers were unable to attend this meeting helping at check in and during the drawings.

The Christmas Committee gave out the information we needed and with candy as a gentle reminder to us of the facts. (You do know that chocolate is a quilting tool! ! !)
Sounds like it is going to be fun!!!

The Guild made a quilt for the proprietors of The Solid Ground where we have our meetings. It was presented to them

The Craft Sale is getting more items...Looks like we will have lots of great items!...Now we need the buyers.

President Vicki called the meeting to order. The restaurant quilt was displayed and will be given to Solid Ground owners at a later date for use of their building.

Reminder was given that the PW guild quilt challenge is due at the November meeting. The largest it can be is 18" x 18" and all four seasons must be on the quilt. It does not have to be a quilt, can be anything you wish to make.

A brief summary of the Christmas party was given.

Vicki asked for volunteers to be on a committee for nominating members for the new 2011 board. No one volunteered to form the committee or be on the board.

A reminder was also given for Craft Fair donations which will be the guilds fund raiser for the year. The Craft Fair will be at Pueblo West High School October 9 and 10, 2010.

The Wounded Warrior Quilt for the month was shown.

Dixie Moorcroft entered this machine embroidered quilt into the Colorado State Fair & won BEST OF SHOW. It is a beautiful quilt.

Sew and Share was and always is enjoyed by all members!!!

Block of the Month drawing for the blue/white log cabin blocks was divided between two winners. Heidi presented the November block.

Cheryl Phillips from Montrose, Colorado was our presenter for the evening. She has a unique system for making quilts and demonstrated many of her techniques to members.

Meeting was called to order by President Vicki. The treasurer's report and minutes were approved.

Update on the donation quilt for the restaurant was given by Vicki, it has been quilted and is now being bound.

The square in a square class was discussed and members were reminded of dates for it.

Reminder was given for our quilt challenge which is due at the November meeting. You must use all four seasons and it can not be any larger than 18" x 18".

While we were gathering, June's Block of the Month kept arriving

and made a colorful display for all to watch as it grew........there were
42 blocks in all, with 2 winners: Renee and Rachael

Congrats to them!

introduced the many guest we had for the evening.

We again show our support for Charitable Donations with the pillowcases and LUV Quilts that arrived for distribution at this meeting.

The program this month was by Cyndi McChesney who
showed the 'Square in a Square' method of making many of the blocks
we struggle in getting even close to the same...this method
appears to help to remove some of the frustration
with our lack of exactitude in piecing.

Cyndi had several examples of what you can do
with the SnS (Square in a Square) Ruler,
she also had a Four Patch Ruler available.

May 3 meeting

Vicki called the meeting to order. We had a guest speaker from Colorado Springs, Co “What Makes a Winner” presented by Barbara Broushous..she is a state quilt judge.

We had several beautiful blocks of the month. They were won by Mari Pretzer. We have also started a red/white/blue block of the month for our Wounded warrior quilt program. We had 32 LUV quilts donated last month. 25 were baby quilts and 7 others. I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make sure we could donate to the CSU-Pueblo organization. There were 6 left over from March so we made the 30 that was needed.

The April Meeting started with a bit of a conundrum, the place we were to meet was locked and so the Board with the quick action of super hero's moved the meeting to the White Library. The room was great and the tables and chairs were great, so it just goes to show we are all flexible and we all are there for the meeting - what a great group! So on with the meeting! And here we are signing in...and it only got better from there.

LUV Quilts and Quilts for CSU-Pueblo for 1st time mothers were in abundance. This was a marvelous showing of generosity that is so abundant in our guild.

Some of these were done using the pattern 'Yellow Brick Road' was graciously donated to our club by the creators at Atkinson Designs, for use as our 2010 LUV quilt pattern.

What a wonderful showing, but there is more.....yes, yes - it is PILLOWCASES that showed up for donations also! ! !

Of course Sew and Share was another favorite - we do love to see what others have accomplished and to share what we have done..another inspiring show!!!

The program was given by the Board and was tip after tip after tip - it was fast moving and fun. Some tips we knew but were given and new twist and some were new - with a crowd like that it would be hard to have all new tips...everyone enjoyed the program and came away with at least a couple of good tips to start there month of quilting off.

President Vicki called the meeting to order Monday March 1.
Many pillowcases were donated for the children's ward at the hospitals.
Many luv quilts were donated.

Sew and share was enjoyed by all. You can see the rest of the photos at our Shutterfly site.

39 very colorful block of the month were won by two of the members!! We look forward to seeing those quilts made from them.

Sue gave the demo for the April block of the month which will be a crazy quilt.

A wonderful applique program was given by Cathy Ortega

The March program will be guest speaker, Cathy Ortega, who will be demonstrating hand appliqué. Members/guests are asked to bring the following for hands-on instruction: thimble, sharp-pointed scissors (curved are best) to trim little pieces, and a couple of straight pins.

Guild pins are for sale $3.00 each make sure you get one for your name tag. We now have a resource book with a list of members who are offering quilting, binding or any quilting related service.

We had many beautiful reds/pinks heart block of the month.

Vicki gave the demo for March's block. Please use a black background and two bright colors.

Faith Wellman---Doodle Time Designs gave a wonderful talk and demonstration to the guild. Faith designs and sells her own quilting patterns.

January meeting was called to order by newly installed president Vicki Becker.

Secretary and Treasurer's reports were read and approved.

Old Business: The Christmas party was discussed. The Treasurer's audit was approved.

The LUV Quilts were discussed. Judy Vasalli will be collecting and distributing the quilts.

Membership dues are due at the February meeting.

BOM demo for February was given by Jennifer Drake it was a heart

BOM January drawing was won by Joey Snow who presented the block at the December meeting and Patsy Morris.

Mari Pretzer presented handouts for anyone wanting to attend her Quilt retreat.

The Sew Expo will be February 4,5 & 6 at the Merchandise Mart in Denver.

The Fat Quarter drawing for February will be red.

Rhonda Dobek presented the new LUV quilt pattern.

Sew and Share was enjoyed by everyone and as usual there were some beautiful quilts!!!

Great big THANKS to the Retiring Board from 2009 – Mary Richardson, Patsy Morris, Krystal Martinez, and Vickie Becker.
A Fat Quarter drawing (Uglies) was won by Carla.
Congrats! To the Christmas Committee, that would be Kris, Janet and Cheryl, for the awesome Party…all we had to do was pay, come and bring a gift (if you wanted to play-so to speak)
Door Prizes were given and there were a lot of them – those receiving were: Faye, Rene, Sue, Barbara, Sally, Cherry, Marilyn, Sandra, Lynda, Mary Anne, June, Alta, Violet, Joey, Jo – WOW that was a lot of prizes and it was a fun time.
Block of the Month for January was an Embroidered Snow Man given out by Joey to be done in blue thread on a white or white-on-white 12 ½ by 12 ½ block.
The dinner was great, check out the pictures, lots of food, ziti, meatballs, chicken, salad, vegetable medley topped off with a dessert made by our Janet, Kris, Cheryl aka ‘The Christmas Committee’
Our usual Raffle Drawings was also held and went to Linda, Virginia, Sandy.
Annual LUV Quilt Drawing went to Dawn – who if you look back thru the photo you will see made some gorgeous quilts and by the way there were 60 LUV QUILTS DONATED IN 2009! Did I hear a cheer??? Hooray to all who participated.
The Gift Exchange was next and there were a few rules, Simple but fun, those who brought gifts were given a number and then got to choose a gift in that order. (Now the fun part) When the gift is chosen and opened; then it can be stolen, the second person can then steal any previously opened gift or choose a never been opened from the table. Thank goodness for the little caveat that any gift can only be stolen 3 times.
We were to make or purchase a ‘kit’ pattern and enough fabric to accomplish the pattern – some of those received that I remember were: Stain Glass Tree Quilt, Root of the Madder Tote, This & Thank Starry Night, Jelly Roll and Pattern, Star Table Runner, Quick N EZ Table Runner, Christmas Snow Wall Quilt, Years to come Table runner, Let it Snow Tote with thread, Thangles with Greens and Yellows, Sweet N Sour Table Runner, Holly Pattern with 12 Petal Flower Design, (sigh) there were many more – and it was fun to watch the progression of the ‘stealing’
All in all it was a wonderful evening and a great culmination of the 2009 Pueblo Quilt Guild meetings.
Many Thanks to the board for yet another great year and
to the Christmas Committee for taking on a big job and doing it in style!

Mary Richardson called the meeting to order on September 14, 2009 at our new location Solid Ground Restaurant 412 South McCulloch Blvd.

Block of the month was a simple nine patch Red/White/Black. Blocks were won by Jeanne and Mary. Alta Swaine gave a demo for the October block of the month Sunbonnet Sue.

Greetings Quilters,
Just a reminder to all of you WE HAVE MOVED!!! Meeting September 14,
2009 will be at the Solid Ground Restaurant, 412 S McCulloch Blvd in
Pueblo West. If you are coming from the West on HWY 50 turn right at McCulloch stop
light, go past the Vectra bank( on your left,) past Deli Dave's( on
your left), there will be a row of connected businesses on your
left, Solid Ground will be the first you will see, ( on your left),
you can park in the back or the front.
If you are coming from the East on HWY 50 turn left at the McCulloch stop light
then follow directions above.

The Sept. meeting will be a work night. Bring your machines if you
wish. I will be giving a Demo on how to trace your enlarged picture
for the Silhouette quilts. Supply list will be emailed to you around
or after Labor Day.

Have a good Labor Day weekend.

Secretary's Report

August 4, 2009

Vice President Patsy Morris called the meeting to order at 7:00pm at
the Ecumenical Church of Pueblo West. Patsy was filling in for Mary
due to out of state guests. Patsy welcomed members and three guests:
Roberta Gonzales, Marcia St. Clair, and Sandra Barringer.

Secretary Report: A copy was sent out by email, postal mail, and can
be found on our blog: www.pueblo-west-quilters.blogspot.com. Motion to
approve was made by Judy and 2nd by Katya.

Treasurer's Report: Vicki reported a balance of $2,134.98. Motion to
approve was made by Sue and 2nd by Evie.

Old Business:

A new location for the PWQ meeting has been found by Mary and Patsy-
Solid Ground Restaurant located at 412 S Mcculloch Blvd. The owner
will not charge a rental fee in return that PWQ patronage the business
(please mention that you are a member of PWQ).

There is a large banquet room that holds up to 100 people. There are
tables and chairs already available and electrical outlets. The
kitchen will NOT be available, so refreshments need to be cookies or
such and drinks (keep simple). The board members would like to donate
$25/month for September, October, and November to the restaurant.
Monday nights are available for our meeting.

A vote was conducted for approval of new location- Majority voted in
favor of new location.

A vote was also conducted for the meeting to return to Monday nights-
Majority voted in favor for meetings to return to Monday nights.

A vote was also conducted to move the time to 6:30 or to keep at 7:00-
Majority voted to keep the meeting time at 7:00pm.

Patsy informed everyone that the September meeting will be held at
7:00pm Monday September 14th(due to Labor day) at the Solid Ground
Restaurant.

Patsy informed everyone that we will still be donating the quilt to
the Ecumenical Church due to the fact that we have been at the church
for almost a year and have not been paying any rent. The quilt was
presented to members after it had been quilted by Mari Pretzer.

The silent auction will still be at the Ecumenical Church Saturday,
October 24th.

Vicki informed members that the Fon's & Porter magazine is still
offering the renew/buy subscriptions where $5 goes to the guild.

Christmas Committee: The committee explained to members the plans for
the party:

Party will be at Rosario's Restaurant 2930 N Elizabeth on Dec 1st,
2009. Dinner will be at 6:30, can arrive at 6:00pm. Members who would
like to attend are asked to pay $7.50, Guest fee $22.00. Please RSVP
and pay Vicki. The committee also presented in lieu of the voluntary
gift exchange, Members who would like to participate, make up a
favorite table runner kit (around $20), print pattern and buy the
fabric needed for the kit.

New Business:

Patsy ask for volunteers-need 3, for the Nominating Committee for 2010
Board. Katya, Alta, and Jeanne volunteered. They will be getting in
touch with all members to see who is interested.

Fat 1/4 drawing for September will be purples and lavenders

BOM: Presented for Mary by Patsy and Crystal
Simple 9-patch done in red, white, and black- 3 1/2 squares. Colors
can be in any random pattern.

Pick 2 Challenge:
Crystal presented the "pick 2" challenge to members. Member who wanted
to participate were asked to pick 2 crayon colors from a bag. Those
two colors must be used in a item that must not exceed 30" X 30".
Members may also use black and/or white. Rules and instructions were
also passed out. A viewer's choice prize will be given.

August Meeting

Greetings and Salutations,

The August Meeting was great as usual! Our VP Patsy stood in for our President who had guests from out of town. The word is she will be back in charge next month.

We are moving our meeting back to the first Monday of each month (with exceptions of course of Holidays) So the next meeting which will be September 14th (that Holiday thing) followed by October 5th and November 2nd.

The meetings will be held at the Solid Ground Restraunt at 412 S McCulloch Blvd for our out of town members and guests this location is approximately 1.5 miles South on McCulloch Blvd from the traffic light at Hwy 50 (that is where the Wal Mart is)

Things I got from the meeting:

1) Silent Auction coming - get ready!

4) Nominations are coming, there was a call for a committee...think about it - this could be fun

5) The Christmas Party is starting to 'shape up' thanks to the committee members - they said some fun things

6) Fons and Porter Subscriptions (prescriptions for some of us) are still available - talk with Vicki

7) September Program will be on a Silhouette Quilt by Patsy, more info to come

8) A Club Challenge has started - this could be very interesting and fun! - oh so fun - we chose 2 colors (crayons from a bag), those 2 are all you can use - plus black and/or white - so maxim of 4 colors, the rest of the rules were given out on a piece of paper - there will be a Viewer's Choice Award.

Our program was a Demo of a Quilting Tool Bag by Joey - we got a lot of helpful hints and a fun presentation of the Bag Joey had made to house her Cutting equipment when going to and from a sewing class or sewing group.

Hello Quilters,
Another month gone and it's almost time for our meeting again!!! WOW how time flies when we are busy quilting!!
Joey Snow will be giving a demo at the Aug 4th meeting. We will be sending out supply info to you shortly.
The fat quarter drawing for August will be bright colored Juvenile/children's prints.
Check out the blog for the link to the BOM if you did not receive it in an email. I am assuming everyone did get it as we did not get any emails back. Those who do not have email were sent a copy in the mail.
The board has a fun challenge project for you to do at home. We will announce it at our next meeting.

JULY 7TH, 2009 MEETING

Patsy Morris called the meeting to order at 7:05pm. Mary Richardson was back and sitting in at the meeting. Patsy welcomed two guests at tonight's meeting: Marsha and Rose and welcomed returning members.

Secretary's report: A copy was sent out by email and postal mail and can be found at our blog: www.pueblo-west-quilters.blogspot.com. Motion to approve was made by Katya and second by Betty.

Treasurer's Report: A detailed spreadsheet can be found at check-in. Vicki reported a balance of $2,224,98. Motion to approve was made by Renee and second by Cheryl.

Old Business:
Relocation committee still looking for possible new location. Chris Magan informed that the Shriner's Club out-too expensive.
Relocation committee consists of Alta, Violet, and Jeanne- if anybody has any ideas please contact any of them.
Sew Saturday- Held June 27Th on paper piecing. 18 signed up and only six showed.
Those who attended showed their finished Hunter's Star blocks. Charlotte showed a finished quilt.
Please be working on your items for our silent auction-we will be having a sew night to work on those items.

New Business:
August meeting will be a presentation by Joey Snow- she will demo a tote for your cutting mats. Joey will be sending out info for fabric requirements.
Rocky Mountain Quilt Fest will be July 9Th-July 11Th
Any one who makes a quilt for Quilts of Valor or Wounded Warriors can now receive a charm to hang on your name tag.

I have outlined my presentation for a demo, which will last about 20 minutes and then having the rest of the time for sewing the cutting mat carriers together. Here is a guideline of what members will need to bring if they want to assemble a bag that evening. Measurements are "rough" as cutting mats vary in size and each will need to measure their mat and then decide what size is needed. If anyone is planning on sewing that evening they will need to prequilt their main bag and interior pieces together. I.e. sandwhich the main fabric/batting and backing (interior) and quilt. Do this twice to create a front and back. I will be giving some of "my" tips on quilting/binding/and strap making. I hope it is helpful.

For Main Bag and Interior

Cut 2 for exterior and 2 for interior - (Measure your mat and add 2" to the length and width i.e. my mat measures 14x23 so I will cut my fabric 16x25)

Batting

cut two pieces as sized above (again, mine will be 16x25)

Handles

2 pieces 4x70 (obviously you will need to piece your fabric to get the 70" AND if your mat is larger you will need to add additional length. But I don't think you will need more than 2 pieces that are 4x 120 or so for a larger mat)

Handle Interfacing

2 pieces 1" x 70 or longer

Binding (DOES NOT have to be bias)

1 3/4" strips for along the top of the bag, the bottom and the two sides (for mine I will need about 125" cut from pieces parts)

Pocket (optional) - you decide and just bring some scraps

Our meeting this month was short so we could enjoy our ice cream social and have time to sew for those who brought their machines.

Relocation committee still looking for possible new location. Chris Magan informed that the Shriner's Club out-too expensive.

Relocation committee consists of Alta, Violet, and Jeanee- if any body has any ideas please contact any of them.

Sew Saturday- Held June 27Th on paper piecing. 18 signed up and only six showed.

Those who attended showed their finished Hunter's Star blocks. Charlotte showed a finished quilt.

Hello Ladies, I am so sorry I was unable to make it to the meeting. Please see attached Block I have chose for my Block of the month. My favorite Color is Blue so we will use blue and white as our colors. Thanks for your patience.

A guild quilt was presented to our President in memory of her Grand daughter Lyndsi. Each member made a block for the quilt. Several members sewed and sashed the blocks and Mari Pretzer quilted it.

Greetings Quilters,

Our next meeting is..........July 7, 2009 at the Church the theme is "Christmas in July" with an ice cream social.

Our Sew Saturday is only two days away!!! If you want to come but haven't signed up that's okay, you can still come. We just needed to know "about" how many paper piecing patterns to copy off for you. Sew Sat starts at 9:30 and runs till 1:00 you may get finished before that but if not bring a snack or sack lunch.

The fat quarter drawing for July will be Patriotic RED/WHITE/BLUE. Any of those colors or combinations will be fine. Stars and stripes will also work well.

Don't forget to bring your favorite topping for our ice cream social and your sewing machine for our Snowball Quilt, please have it cut out and ready to sew. It does not have to be Christmas fabric however we thought it would be a fun way to have a Christmas Quilt ready by Christmas if we started on them in July. The Old World Snowball pattern fit with Christmas in July.

Just to let those of you who were not at the June meeting know..........the board has set up a "relocation committee" to work on finding a place to move so that we will not keep getting bumped from our room or having to share with other groups at the same time. Alta, Jeanne and Violet are working on other facilities. If anyone knows of a place "large" enough for us please let one of the board members or relocation committee know.

Our President will remain on a leave of absence through July and possibly August. Mary thinks she will be up to coming to the July meeting if only for a short time. She is working on her snowball quilt, and I was happy to see that!!

Secretary's Report

Vice President Patsy Morris called the meeting to order at 7:00pm at the Ecumenical Church of Pueblo West. Due to the sudden death of Mary Richardson's granddaughter, Patsy will be filling in for Mary. Mary will be taking a leave of absence and she will be back.

After welcoming two guest: Becky and Audra, Patsy also welcomed our guest speaker for tonight's program Nani from Nala's Quiltique in fountain.

SECRETARY'S REPORT: The minutes were sent out via email, postal and could be found on our blog site. Motion for approval was made by Evie and 2ND by Katya.

TREASURER'S REPORT: A detail spreadsheet could be found at the desk with check-ins. Vicki reported a balance of $2,230.98. Motion for approval was made by Judy and 2ND by Dawn.

Mary, our President will be taking a leave of absense.

Coming on June 27th is our Sew Saturday 9:30 to 1:00 information was given out for those who were signed up - If you were not in attendance and wish to join please call Patsy (see your roster for the correct number) for the Supply List & to make sure your name is on the sign-up sheet.

Next month we will be having "Christmas in July" and Ice Cream Social and sew night. We will be making a Christmas quilt. A pattern was given out. The name of the pattern is Old-World Snowballs. Do not forget to have all the cutting completed and ready to start sewing - See the photo of the one Patsy completed already! You go girl!

Hello Ladies,

Another new member!!! That makes me happy. Welcome to all of you.

The fat quarters for this month are Christmas. One person will win them all.

The block of the month is called Rose Bud. Hope we have many. The block for July

will be demonstrated by Cheryl Eaton.

The CARE meeting will be at the church again this month,this is the last one until Fall.

Then they'll have their own night. So PLEASE don't come very early, About 6:45 or so.

That way they can clear out.

Along with the icecream social in July, we will be having a sew night. Christmas in July.

You will be given a pattern, so you can have the pieces all cut and ready to sew.

Nalas from Fountain will be doing our program in June. Looking forward to having them with us.

Don't forget sew Saturday June 27th. Charlotte and Patsy will be teaching paper piecing. So bring fabric, machine and sewing essentials. You will be given a pattern and the paper. This should be a fun day. So many of you want to learn paper piecing.

Bring snacks or lunch and something to drink.

I hope you are working on things for the auction, at least thinking of what you're going to do. It will be sneaking up on us.

We still have guild pins for $4.00. We'd like to have everyone own one.

Mari Pretzer has the quilt for the church, she will be quilting it. Judy did a great job sewing it together.

May 2009 Meeting

The May meeting begins.

Lots of fun things to inspire us to achieve what we can in a months time……

Block of the Month that were raffled turned out awesome!

Block of the Month for the June Meeting has great possibilities! Thanks for the instruction.

LUV Quilts come in each month and are sent to some GREAT organizations for appropriate distribution!

Sew and Share is almost sensory overload! Such great quilts and projects!

As always we get a Snack break (kind of like Kindergarden) and time to interact with one another.

The program by Carolyn Collette – Table Runner – hmmm did you try it yet??? Looks good and appears to be easily accomplished.

News Letter
Meeting-- Tuesday May 5, at 7PM

Hello all you lovely ladies.

I know for the most part this letter is old news.We've been over about everything.
We now have "54" members. How great is that!!!
I think when some of you arrived last meeting you wondered what was going on. All those cars.
Well it's a money raising function for the church, and they will be there again during our next meeting.
And possibly again in June.We're doing the best we can to accomodate everyone. Sorry for any inconveniance, like parking.
Arrive as close to 7 p.m. as you can.
The block of the month for June will be demonstrated by Jeannie Renck. Be sure and bring all your May blocks. Black star with Black on white background.
We will be dividing the blocks into two groups, if there's enough.
Fat quarters are to be stripes or polka dots in May. As many as you want. One person will win them all.
Carolyn Collette will be demonstrating the posie table runner.You can bring your sewing equipment if you would like.
There's been information for what will be needed for that project sent out via e-mail. Carolyn will also have instructions.
There are still eleven (11) blocks to be turned in for the church quilt. Please bring them to the May meeting.
Refreshments will be brought to you by, Jean McDonald, Nina Stevens, and Sandra McDonald. Thank- You.
We will be having a sew Saturday June 27th, 9 a.m. until 2--2:30. It will be on paper-piecing. Charlotte Hillson and Patsy Morris will be teaching us. So
all of you that have been asking for paper-piecing,PLEASE COME. Bring sewing supplies and fabric. They will supply the pattern and paper.You will also need to bring snacks or a sack lunch. We will remind you again at the June meeting.

Our April 7th meeting was called to order by President Mary Richardson. The Treasurers Report and minutes of the last meeting were approved.

Block of the Month drawing was divided into three groups. Teapot blocks were won by Carol Pfeifer, JoAnn Allen and Joey Snow.

May Block of the Month demo was given by Patsy Morris. The Friendship Star Block was used and is to be made with a black star and black on white. Do not let the colors in the photo deceive you.

The Luv quilts were donated. Each time you donate a luv quilt you receive a beaded charm for your name tag and your name goes into the year end drawing.

The Sew and Share portion of our meeting in combination with a trunk show by members was a sight to see. We got to see many different quilts made by members and some really great items obtained from others, a few rescued quilts and many others, which we would not otherwise have seen. Many people brought a variety of items to show.

We have started a monthly fat quarter drawing. Bring up to three fat quarters and win the basket of them. Our first month drawing was any fat quarter. This month's drawing was flowered fat quarters they were won by Mary Richardson, Mari Pretzer and Virginia Biggs.

The Fat Quarter theme for May is either stripes or polka dots.

There are still ELEVEN donation quilt blocks out there. PLEASE make sure you have those blocks turned in at our next meeting so Judy can get started on the construction of the quilt!!!

Carolyn Collette will be giving a demo at the next meeting on how to make an appliqued table runner. Watch your email for the specific items you will need if you wish to sew at the meeting, if you prefer to just watch the demo that is fine too, directions will be given out by Carolyn.

Happy Spring Ladies! Although to me it seems like we didn’t have any winter.
Our attendance is getting larger all the time, that makes me happy.
The block of the month is doing great, if it keeps doing well we’ll most likely split it
into two drawings. That will please more people.
We’re also going to continue the fat quarter drawings. This month we will exchange
“floral” fat quarters for spring.
Don’t forget to bring your completed blocks for the church donation quilt. And Thank- You very much. Looks like it’s going to be quite nice. Mary Pretzer is going to do the quilting for it, and we’re going to pay her.
Patsy will be demonstrating the block of the month for May. Hopefully we’ll have a lot of teapot blocks for our drawing this month.
Refreshments for this month are brought to us by Renee Kern, Mary Ann McSchooler and Jeannie Renck. Thank-You.
Our program this month is a trunk show, put on by all of you. So ladies dig those antique quilts and others out and bring them to the meeting. Limit three each.
We had fun at our sew Saturday, that type of sewing could become addictive, while you’re also using up lots of scraps.
We will still have our show and tell, and luv quilts—before the trunk show.
We will be having at least two more sew Saturdays this year. One on quilting with your
Home sewing machine, and one on paper piecing. As soon as I have the dates I’ll let all of you know.
As I’m writing this the Quilt Expo isn’t happening yet, but by the time we have our meeting it will be over. Hope everyone who attended had a great time.

March 2009 Meeting

In the beginning, before the meeting starts - - - -

We get to sign in and pick up a copy of the Agenda for the evening and

get tickets for the In House Raffles,

add our Fat Quarters (FQ's) to the drawing (if you brought one),

put our name in the Name Tag drawing (if we are wearing our name tag)

and add our Block of the Month creation to the drawing.

This months Block of the Month was not lacking for beautiful colors.

Who knows! With all those chances you too just might be a Winner.

However, by just coming to the meeting you are a winner - you get all sorts of ideas and some wonderful interaction with fellow quilters. Have you ever tried 'mixing it up a bit' and seating yourself with a different group of members and visitors? Who knows what you will find. Try it you just may like it!

LUV Quilts arrive every month and are very appreciated by the various receipents. It has been requested that each of us put a Label with the Pueblo West Quilters Guild and the year. You may of course put your name on also if you wish.

The Block of the Month for next month is an Appliqued TeaPot - Jean demonstrated the block and several different Tea Pots to choose from were given out at the meeting.

There is to be a Sew Saturday on March 14th it will be held at the Ecumenical Church and start at 9 am - the project will be 'Mile a Minute' quilt top (see the picture).Sounds like fun!

Fabrics to bring with you would be:

A good variety of scraps at least 1" in size, A good variety of strips from 1" to 3" in width, and
Any odd blocks, strip sets or UFO's
And of course your equipment:

Sewing machine, Rotary mat, cutter, and ruler, Scissors, 6" square (or larger if you want), Several partial spools of left-over thread (any color), Several bobbins wound with left-over thread (does not have to match upper thread), Ironing board/iron - if you want.

There will be a few ironing board/iron for everyone to use. A sack lunch if you want to take a break to eat.

Time: 9 am -2 pm We will begin promptly at 9:30 am and end at 1:30 pm

Our program for the evening was Denise from The Creative Cloth Closet in Canon City. See the quilts on the wall - Denise gave us information on making these quickly with the new Accu-cut tool. A new tool ! Yeah! Just what we all may need.

Next meeting Tuesday April 7th. Yes Tuesday the Pueblo West View keeps getting it wrong, they are still running Monday, we're working on that!!

Hello Ladies of the Pueblo West Quilt Guild
Meeting Tuesday March 3rd , 7 P.M. Ecumenical Church 434 S. Conquistador Pueblo West, CO.

I enjoyed and think the rest of the ladies enjoyed the making of the bowls
at the February meeting. I am looking forward to seeing some of them at our
show and tell in March. There are lots of shapes and embellishments you can do to them.
The March block of the month is interesting. Hope we'll have lots of them.

Hostesses for March are Heidi Gard and Julie Gillespie. Lets keep it simple. Water and a flavored drink, brownies, cookies or another kind of bar.

Denise from The Creative Cloth Closet will be our guest speaker for our March
meeting.
I'm excited with what she's going to show us. Denise will have some for
sale items. How fun :)

We will also be starting a fat quarter drawing. So everyone bring one fat quarter to the meeting. Winner will take all fat quarters home!!!

This will be the last reminder, if you want to be a member of the guild and continue getting a newsletter your dues have to be paid.

If you are a previous member and your dues aren't paid yet $24.00 in full is due at this time.

February 2009 Meeting

The February meeting was called to order by President Mary Richardson.

The February block of the month, hearts presented by Katya at our January meeting was won by Patty Dunnington!! Patty brought her heart quilt which she finished from the block of the month two years ago!!! Way to go Patty!!!!

We had a lot of Luv quilts donated this month after our January Luv quilt sew night. Thank you to everyone who so diligently donates Luv quilts.

Sew and Share was enjoyed by everyone. We had a variety of shared items.

A new member to the guild and to quilting made "Oh so cute" quilted boots and pillows.

Another member shared her Chemo quilt with us. Explaining that she made herself get out of bed each day after chemo to work on a block a day. Each block represents the different physical and psychological aspects of her treatment. We were in AWE of how well she depicted her emotions through quilt blocks!!! Our prayers are with you Helen!

The program for February was a demonstration on how to make fabric bowls from cotton clothesline rope. The board members each gave demo's on how to wrap and sew the bowls. Those participating had a great time and were in awe of how easy the bowls were to make. I'm sure we will be seeing many bowls at the next meeting during our Sew and Share. For more info on the bowl

Hello Ladies of the Pueblo West Quilt Guild.

Tuesday February 3rd 7:00 P.M. Ecumenical Church,434 Conquistador.

Our executive board will demonstrate how to make bowls out of fabric and clothesline rope. We will give everyone who wants to participate 25 ft. of rope and show you how to wrap it.. You will need to bring 1/2 yd. of fabric cut into 3/4 inch strips. That will be enough for a small bowl. You won't have to bring sewing machines.

The hostesses this month for refreshments are Violet Craddock, JoAnne Allen,and June Bush.

Block of the month by Katya Holen, From the Heart. Make it in red or pink with white or white on white.

All of the committees haven't been filled, so we'll have the sign up sheets out again for you. The executive board is taking over the planning committee, since no one signed up for it.

Don't forget your yearly dues are due at the February meeting. See you there.
